Cross-Cultural Healthcare Resources: Home

A guide to cultural information relevant to health professionals.

An individual's cultural and ethnic background can be a major factor in the way he/she views, and interacts with, healthcare in the United States.  Cultural beliefs, understandings and expectations can shape, among other things:

  • Views of traditional vs. "modern" medicine
  • The role of family in the healthcare/healing process
  • Interpersonal interactions with healthcare providers
  • Beliefs about the causes of illness
  • Views on the importance/unimportance of preventive care

It is vitally important for healthcare providers to understand, and work with, the beliefs and expectations of patients/clients from different cultural backgrounds.  This guide is intended to provide starting points for that understanding - if there is any information that would be helpful to add, please let us know!
