Getting Articles and Books

Many scholarly books and articles are not free. The Library can get them for you at no cost to you, though, so don't pay for them! Here is how to get access:

  1. Double-check for access through the Pacific Library. Go to: http://www.lib.pacificu.edu/ and search using the field at the top of the page:

  2. On the Search Results page, be sure to LOG IN with your Pacific PUNetID and Password! If you don't, our systems will not know that you deserve access to all of our paid subscription databases!

  3. In the search results, if you see a record for the item you need:

    If it's a physical book,
the Call Number will give you the "address" of where it is on the shelf in the library.
If it's a journal article or E-Book, look for a link to "Check for Online Access":

This should take you to a menu titled "View It." Click on any of the links into our databases:

This should take you to a page that describes the journal article or E-Book. To get the actual article, look for something on the page that says "PDF" or "Full Text". For example:

  4. In the search results, if you see a record for the item you need, but you can't seem to actually get the item -- like the PDF isn't there, or it's checked out, etc.

    • Request it through "Summit." Summit is our network of around 40 academic libraries in the Pacific Northwest. You can quickly get MILLIONS of books and articles through this network, delivered to our front desk for you (for books) or via PDF (for articles). Try this option first, if it is available. Summit requests appear under the title of your item in Boxer Search, through the "Check Availability" Link:

This should take you to the "Get It" menu; click to Request it through Summit:

    • Or (2nd choice) Request it through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). ILL is an even bigger network of thousands of libraries world-wide. It is usually slower than Summit, but it will also deliver books to our front desk or articles via PDF.
Summit requests appear under the title of your item in Boxer Search, through the "Check Availability" Link:

This should take you to the "Get It" menu; click to Request it through Interlibrary Loan:

  5. Not finding it at all in Boxer Search? Request it directly through our Interlibrary Loan service.
  • Go to our  Interlibrary Loan service
  • The first time you log in, you'll have to create an account. After the first time, you'll just have to log in.
  • Need a journal article? Go to New Request > Copy Request. Fill out the form with as much information as you have about the article. It will be sent to you as a PDF as soon as possible. (Often within days; sometimes takes longer if it is a rare source.)
  • Need a book or other physical item? Go to New Request > Loan Request. Fill out the form with as much information as you can. Our staff will find another library that can loan you the item, using a network of thousands of libraries around the world. This option can take longer, depending on how hard the item is to find and how far away it is.
