What are Point-of-Care Resources?

Point-of-care (POC) resources are information tools that a clinician can immediately refer to at the point-of-care with a patient. Also called e-medical textbooks, evidence-based resources, and decision support tools. They contain evidence-based, summarized medical information that are often quick and easy-to-use. Sample products include UpToDate, eMedicine, DynaMed, and Clinical Evidence. Most of these point-of-care tools include a variety of sources like journal articles, e-textbooks, images, expert opinions, practice guidelines, and patient information. The content is ranked according to levels of evidence or given grade recommendation; all source citations refer back to the original research studies and/or systematic reviews.

AccessPharmacy This link opens in a new window An online curricular resource. Allows students to select a core curriculum topic, browse by organ system, review textbooks, or search across leading pharmacy online references. Includes lab tests, calculators, and curricular and organ system quizzes.
ClinicalKey This link opens in a new window Current developments in medicine: daily summaries of important developments in medicine, reviews of significant new clinical trials, current therapy reviews on topics from leading specialists on current trends, patient care and analysis. Formerly MDConsult.
UpToDate This link opens in a new window UpToDate covers more than 7,700 topics in 14 medical specialties and includes more than 80,000 pages of text, graphics, links to Medline abstracts, more than 260,000 references, and a drug database. Its physician editors and authors review and update the content continuously. UpToDate includes treatment recommendations based on the best medical evidence, which are kept current as new studies are released and practices change.
