Guide to Sources on the British Empire (1815-1914)

This guide provides links to primary and secondary sources related to the British Empire, focusing on the "Imperial Century" (1815-1914). We have limited abilities to actually travel to the places where original materials are kept, so this guide focuses on digitized sources that are freely available online.

Because most of these sources were both created and archived by the British themselves, you will notice that they reflect the viewpoints of the colonial powers and other elites. In order to get at how colonized peoples experienced British imperialism, you will need to read critically and compare multiple types of evidence.

Note: This guide is being created for the Fall 2020 Pacific University course, HIST 333. Please send corrections or suggestions to the author, Librarian Eva Guggemos.
