Editing Your Quiz Settings
As any activity in Moodle, quizzes come with the global settings that specify the rules for interacting with the quiz. These rules include a wide variety of options such as the time limit, number of attempts, grading methods, layout, question behavior, review options, enforced delay, feedback, and viewing restrictions. This page demonstrates how to find and edit these global settings.
To get to global settings and edit the quiz in Moodle, you must first click the Turn editing on button in the top right corner. Mouse over the quiz that you wish to edit. Select the Edit button from the far right of the quiz. Click it and then select Edit Settings.
1. First, go to the Timing tab. Time Limit: When creating a quiz, you have the ability to use a time limit. This puts a limit on how long the student has to complete the quiz once he or she has started it. The time limit can range anywhere from a number of seconds to a number of days depending on the time limit you would like to set.
If a student begins the quiz and closes it before the time limited is finished, the student can still re-open the quiz within that time limit and finish that attempt. However, once the quiz is closed they no longer have access to the quiz. If a quiz closes or the time limit expires while the student is taking the quiz, their responses will be submitted automatically even if they have not finished the quiz.
2. Attempts Allowed: You are also able to adjust the number of times a student is permitted to take the quiz by going to the Grade tab. The student can be allowed one attempt to ten attempts or an unlimited amount of attempts. This means that once the student has already taken the quiz, he or she can go back and take the quiz over and over again until he or she has reached the maximum number of attempts.
3. Grading Method: There are four different grading methods: highest grade, average grade, first attempt and last attempt:
Highest Grade: Moodle will take all of the different attempts made on the quiz and use whichever grade is the highest.
Average Grade: Moodle averages together all of the grades the student received on the quiz and that becomes his final quiz grade.
First attempt: The student is graded only on their first attempt at the quiz.
Last attempt: The student is graded only on their last attempt at the quiz.
4. In Layout: You are given two options for the layout of your quiz: 1. how many questions you want on each page 2. and what order you would like the questions to be in. You can put the questions in random order, where they will be changed for every student taking the quiz and for every attempt students make at the quiz, or you can have the quiz be organized in a fixed order. You can also edit how many questions you would like per page. This ranges from one question to fifty questions per page. These options may also be changed after the fact.
5. Question Behavior
Moodle allows you to set up your quiz so the questions and responses behave in a variety of different ways as the student is taking the quiz. Descriptions of the behavior options are below:
Shuffle Within Questions: This option is available only for multiple choice answers. The possible answers will be shuffled each time the question is asked.
Adaptive Mode: If a student gets a question wrong, they may immediately attempt the question again instead of having to repeat the entire quiz. The student will be penalized by a selected amount (e.g. 25 percent). This is accompanied by the next option, ‘no penalties’.
Deferred feedback: This is the default setting. This option requires students to answer everyquestion and submit the entire quiz before anything is graded or they get any feedback. If you select "with CBM" it will allow students to enter their level of certainty for their response for each question. Their certainty value will change the amount of credit or penalty they receive for that specific question.
Immediate feedback: This option allows students to have immediate feedback on each question as they are taking the quiz. *Ensure that the "during the attempt" boxes are checked off for review options. See below. If you select "with CBM" it will allow students to enter their level of certainty for their response for each question. Their certainty value will change the amount of credit or penalty they receive for that specific question.
Interactive with multiple tries: When students submit each question they recieve immediate feedback, and if they do not get it correct have another chance for fewer points.
Apply Penalties: If you choose to apply penalties, you are giving the students the option to attempt the question again, if they got it wrong, for partial credit. This option is not available in adaptive mode.
*Advanced: Each Attempt Builds on the Last: In order to see this option, you must choose to 'show advanced.' If this option is enabled, the students will be able to see their previous attempts when taking the quiz again.
6. Review Options: This section is connected to the quiz behaviour settings and determines what information will appear when students review their past attempts at the quiz (and during the quiz in adaptive mode). Check all options you would like to be available for the student to review. "Immediately after the attempt" refers to immediately after the quiz is attempted. "Later, while the quiz is still open" refers to while the time period for the quiz is still open but the quiz has been submitted.
The attempt: Whether or not the student may review the quiz as well as their responses.
Marks: the score the student received presented in a numerical format.
Specific feedback: The feedback will depend on the student's response to the question.
General feedback: The feedback will appear automatically, regardless of the student's response to that question.
Overall feedback: This feedback relates to the entire quiz. This setting can be created in another part of the settings form.
7. Enforce Delay: You are able to require your students to wait to retake a quiz after they have already taken it once. This option allows you to make them wait anywhere from a number of seconds to a number of days.
8. Respondus LockDown Browser: An additional option is to require LockDown Browser for the student to attempt and review the quiz. LockDown Browser is a separate, downloadable program that prevents all other applications from running on the user's computer while they are attempting the quiz. Select the box next to the option(s) you wish will require LockDown Browser.
9. Feedback (grade boundary feedback): One of the final options for creating a quiz is to give automatic feedback. You may provide feedback to students who scored in any range of grades. For example, if you would like to meet with any students who scored a 60 percent or below, you may write 60 percent in the grade boundary box and write in the feedback box “See me after Monday’s class"
10. Restrict Access
This option allows you to restrict student's access to the quiz to specific dates. You may also choose to make the quizzes accessible depending on the student's grade.
Next, select Date from the following options
Select From from the dropdown menu and set the date you wish to start hiding your post
Then add another restriction, the same way as before, and select Until from the dropdown menu. Set the date when you would like your post to become unrestricted
Click "Save and display" to verify you have properly configured all settings.
